"The principle of different shapes and alignments of adhesive contacts as found in the spider attachment system can improve the attachment ability of bioinspired materials to a broad range of substrates with different properties." At a closer look a large diversity of mechanosensitive hair sensilla can be seen. And it is to a large extent this diversity of the mechanosensory hairs which enriches the small sensory space of spiders which lack long distance senses like our vision and hearing. The tactile sense is a close-range sense par excellence. Its hairs all form first-order lever systems and follow the same basic Bauplan. Their outer hair shaft always protrudes from a cuticular socket and they are innervated by 1-3 (most typically three) sensory cells with dendritic terminals close to the end of the inner lever arm.

Then, there is smaller hair above your eyes – your eyebrows and eye lashes. Tarantulas native to the Eastern Hemisphere, by contrast, do not have urticating setae. Instead they have more potent venom and use an aggressive stance to warn predators before they bite. Tarantulas use their "hair" for all kinds of things, including smelling and tasting. Spiders' Hundreds of Fine Hairs Are Hundreds of Ears
They found that some hairs had the strongest adhesion at one angle. Concludes Schaber, this mix of angles and adhesions may help the spider stick no matter how it touches a wall. The liquid flows into pouches, called caeca, which range through the spider’s body and can nearly fill the abdomen to bursting in a well-fed spider.

Urtica is Latin for "nettle" (stinging nettles are in the genus Urtica), and bristles that urticate are characteristic of this type of plant, and many other plants in several families. This term also refers to certain types of barbed bristles that cover the dorsal and posterior surface of a tarantula's or caterpillar's abdomen. Many tarantula species eject bristles from their abdomens, directing them toward potential attackers. These bristles can embed themselves in the other animal's skin or eyes, causing physical irritation, usually to great discomfort. The term "hairs" is technically a misnomer, as only mammals possess true hairs.[1] The scientific term for plant hairs is trichomes.
Type III urticating hairs are most efficient for defense against vertebrates and invertebrates. Types III and IV are the most irritating to mammalian predators. Adults of some species also have urticating scales, and some species shed some of their urticating hairs as defense for their pupae and eggs. Our hair toppers are excellent for adding volume and covering thinning areas, boosting your confidence. They are unusual in that they do not transfer sperm directly, for example via a penis.
Spiders Use Microscopic Hairs on their Feet to Climb Surfaces
Type II urticating hairs can be found in the genera Avicularia, Iridopelma and Pachistopelma (subfamily Aviculariinae). Unusually, Type III urticating hair is found alone on the species of Theraphosa spp., but these otherwise are similar to many species that also have Type I hairs. Type II is usually not kicked off by the tarantula, rather delivered by direct contact. The most common form of urticating hairs in plants are typified by nettles, which possess sharp-pointed hollow bristles seated on a gland that secretes an acrid fluid. The points of these bristles usually break off in the wound, and the acrid fluid is pressed into it. Various plants unrelated to true nettles (Urtica species) possess similar defensive bristles, and the common names often reflect this (e.g. "bull nettle").

Cupiennius belongs to the hairy type of wandering spiders with several 100 thousands of hairs on its exoskeleton (Figure 2). The vast majority of these hairs is innervated and serving a tactile function, the major exception being the non-innervated short yellowish plume hairs of adult spiders. There are also some chemoreceptive hairs among them, however, which are mostly found on the distal sections of walking legs and pedipalps and recognized by the steeper angle to the cuticular surface and often a slightly S-shaped hair shaft. Among the 21 sensory cells of each of these hairs there are two mechanosensitive ones, responding to the deflection of the hair shaft (Harris and Mill 1973, 1977). Different from chemoreceptive hairs the majority of the other hairs are unimodal, responding to mechanical forces deflecting the hair shaft by direct contact (Foelix 1985). The density of these hairs is up to about 400/mm2 (Eckweiler 1983; Friedrich 1998).
Spiders are beneficial
They also provide the input stage for a spider's tactile sense. Spider hairs perform many important functions, many of which are sensory. Some hairs are sensitive to touch, others detect chemicals (in a similar way to how we taste and smell), and others allow them to climb smooth surfaces. Spiders also have long fine hairs called trichobothria which are sensitive to fine air movement.

Instead the males transfer it to specialized structures (palpal bulbs) on the pedipalps and then meander about to search for a mate.[15] These palps are then introduced into the female's epigyne. In 1843 it was revealed that males build a nuptial web into which they deposit a drop of semen, which is then taken up by the copulatory apparatus (the palpal bulb) in the pedipalp. The structure of the copulatory apparatus varies significantly between males of different species. While the widened palpal tarsus of the southern house spider, Kukulcania hibernalis (Filistatidae), only forms a simple bulb containing the coiled blind duct, members of the genus Argiope have a highly complex structure.
Spiders have been around for eons, but there aren’t many fossil records because their bodies are soft and easily deteriorate. The largest spider is the Goliath Birdeater Tarantula, Theraphosa blondi, which has a leg span of up to 10 inches (25.4 cm) and may weigh more than 6 ounces (170 g). As they tweaked the speaker's sounds, a video camera recorded the oil particles moving around the hairs.
